tips for
What to wear for your photos
Trying to figure out what to wear for your family photo session?
It can definitely feel like a lot to think about — but it doesn’t have to be overwhelming! These 8 tips will help you plan your outfits with confidence and answer some of the most common questions I get from families prepping for their session.
1. Choose Comfort That Looks Polished
You don’t have to go full formal, but aim to dress a step above everyday wear. Think: nicer than your favorite leggings and t-shirt, but still comfortable enough to move and play in. Flowy dresses look beautiful in photos (and let’s be honest, moms rarely get a reason to dress up!). For dads, try khakis or chinos instead of worn jeans or athletic wear. Make sure kids can run and play freely in their outfits — because they will!

3. Color Palette = Mood + Timelessness
Think about where these photos will live — are you printing them for the wall or using them for holiday cards? Neutral tones are always timeless and blend with most home decor. Earthy or jewel tones also photograph beautifully. Try to skip neons or logos — they can be distracting and don't always age well in photos. Bright colors also cause there to be a color cast on the skin that can be unflattering and difficult to edit. If you're not sure if it's too bright, try standing in front of a mirror and holding the shirt under your chin in a well lit room. If it reflets at all on your skin, that will sow in your photos.

2. Start with One Outfit and Build from There
The easiest way to coordinate outfits? Pick one “main” piece (like mom’s dress or a standout outfit for one of the kids), and plan the rest around it. Pull colors or tones from that staple piece to create a cohesive look without stressing about matching exactly.
4. Consider the Season
Dress for the weather, especially with little ones. If it’s chilly, opt for layers or sweaters instead of lightweight outfits that may leave you (or your kids) freezing. Cold kids=grumpy kids. For warmer sessions, stick to breathable fabrics to stay cool and comfortable. Pro tip: Darker shirts for dad can help hide sweat if it’s a hot day!
5. Location Sets the Vibe
Your setting will help guide your outfit choices. A wide open field might feel dreamy with flowy dresses, while an urban or city setting might call for a more tailored or modern look. For in-home sessions, lean into cozy, relaxed pieces that reflect real family life — barefoot and comfy always works!
6. Avoid the “Matchy-Matchy” Look
Rather than everyone wearing the same thing, mix complementary tones and textures. Coordinating colors (not identical ones) help create a more visually interesting and natural look. If someone’s outfit has a pattern, pull subtle colors from it to incorporate into the rest of the family’s wardrobe. try not to add too many patterns as this can be distracting. One or two people with patterns per every 5-6 people is great. Use texture though! all kinds of different textures adds dynamic and photographs beautifully.
7. Prioritize Movement & Confidence
We’ll be moving around — expect tickles, twirls, and maybe a little bit of chaos (in the best way). Make sure you can move freely in your clothes and, more importantly, that you feel great in them. Confidence always shines through in photos!
8. Be True to You
At the end of the day, what matters most is that your photos reflect who you are. Don’t worry about being perfect — be yourselves, have fun, and let your personalities shine. That’s what makes the best memories (and the best images).
